Questions About Hypnotherapy

In this video clip I run through some  of the main questions and confusions about hypnotherapy.

Stage it real is a popular question. Also the question of control and side effects make some clients doubtful about hypnosis. The fact that hypnosis is based on the imagination and relaxation with suggestion is something that can take some time getting used to after having seen the TV hypnotist do his showy magical finger clicking stunts.

What Conditions Can Hypnotherapy Treat?

That long list of treatable conditions that adorn hypnotherapist‘s websites..are they too good to be true?

This video clip explains how I think Hypnotherapy can help with such a large number of issues and problems.

The clue is in the placebo effect or the belief effect.

Hypnosis, Imagination, And Placebo All Reduce Pain

Pain relief is one of the seemingly magical effects of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

This study compares Hypnosis with Imagination and Placebo and found that all three reduce pain and that Imaginiation is as effective as Hypnosis.

Interesting stuff…well for me it is anyway.

The study also showed that expectation, the idea of a positive outcome, increases the effect of all three methods, while Placebo benefited the most from the expectation of success.

Now we know why snake oil salesman talk up their product, it really does make snake oil more effective!

Is Mesmerism The Same As Hypnosis?

Well….not really.

Because Mesmer didnt think his effects were due to suggestion. He thought he really did have special powers that affected his patients.

The process of Mesmerism involved high theatre, a bit like a modern stage hypnosis show. Mesmer dressed in a flamboyant style and there was a massive expectation that ‘something’ was going to happen..and it did.

Mesmer came unstuck when a rational scientific approach was applied to verifying his results. So called ‘magnetized’ water was seen to have the same effect as non magnetized water when the fluids were switched without the patients and Mesmer’s awareness, an early form of the double blind trial.

Modern hypnotherapists use the art of expectation to get results but hopefully by being honest with their clients about the limits of suggestion. Suggestion can have amazing effects on the mind and body but its not a cure-all.

Hypnosis, The Non Deceptive Placebo.

Followers of Ben Goldacre and Bad Science will be aware of the bashing that alternative therapies have been getting.

Homeopathy and Chiropractic have been under scrutiny and have  been perhaps rightly knocked for  having pseudo scientific concepts.

So is hypnotherapy the next in line for such treatment? Well it wouldnt be a bad thing to have a discussion on the theory behind hypnosis.

Researchers in the field of hypnosis are now heavily promoting the idea that its all suggestion and that a distinct definable ‘state’ that indicates hypnosis does not exist.

Check out the great work by Irving Kirsch.

In other words its a great big wonderful placebo that can be applied without deception because the client knows ‘its all in the mind’.
